About the Government Flying Training School (GFTS)
The Government Flying Training School (GFTS) at Jakkur, Bengaluru, set up in 1950, is one of the oldest flying schools in India. The state-owned flying training school operates under the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Government of Karnataka and offers tenured programs leading to the issue of Commercial Pilot License (CPL) and Private Pilot License (PPL) for aspiring aviators.
GFTS is spread over a total area of 214 acres at Jakkur Aerodrome, incorporating flight training facilities, administrative blocks, maintenance hangars, and common aviation infrastructure including an 854-meter runway and airstrip facilities.
Courses & Aviation Programs Offered
- Commercial Pilot License (CPL): 24-month duration program comprising 200 hours of compulsory flight training and 300 periods of ground theoretical classes covering Air Regulation, Air Navigation, Meteorology, Aircraft General, and Technical specifics. Minimum age: 17 years. Qualification: 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics.
- Private Pilot License (PPL): 12-month duration program comprising 40 hours of flight training and theoretical ground instruction. Minimum age: 17 years. Qualification: 10th Pass.
- Student Pilot License (SPL): Included as part of the PPL/CPL curriculum (10th Pass minimum).
- Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) Training: On-the-Job Training (OJT) for 6 months (₹15,000 fee) and 3-month Apprenticeships (₹3,000 fee).

- Aircraft Fleet: 02 Cessna 152 aircraft & 02 Cessna 172 aircraft.
- Flight Simulator: Elite S812 Single Engine Flight Simulator.
- Maintenance & Support: Fully equipped Aircraft Maintenance Section with tooling equipment, Hangar-cum-Store Room, Crash Tender Vehicle, and Light Vehicles.
- Administrative & Academic Facilities: Director Chamber, Conference Hall with CCTV monitoring, smart classroom with projection and internet facilities, Flight Briefing Section, Library, Trainees Restroom, First Aid Room, and Guard Room.

- Operational Hours & Airspace: Day VFR traffic only (Dawn to Dusk). ATS Call Sign: Jakkur Tower on 122.5 MHz. Flying subject to Yelahanka ATC coordination.

Safety Guidelines
All trainees, visitors, and personnel must adhere strictly to DGCA regulations and Indian Aircraft Rules. Prior clearance from Jakkur Tower (122.5 MHz) and Yelahanka ATC is mandatory for all flying operations. Entry to airside, runway, hangars, and taxiways is restricted to authorized personnel carrying valid photo identification. No unauthorized photography or videography inside aerodrome boundaries. No smoking, open flames, or hazardous materials anywhere on aerodrome premises.
